Let's review, shall we? You said "when the DCs boot up they try to tidy=20
things up a bit and

create a zone test.ourcompany.com with pointer web. Unfortunately they
fail to complete the job."

What the hell does that mean? "Tidy things up a bit"? Tidiness is in the =
eye of the beholder. I'm supposed to read your mind to figure out what yo=
u mean by that? "Create a zone test.ourcompany.com with pointer web". If =
by "pointer" you mean a PTR record, then why on earth would the DC be put=
ting a PTR record in a *forward* zone? Usually they are only found in *re=
verse* (i.e. in-addr.arpa) zones. You're aware of that, right? And, final=
ly, what's with "they fail to complete the job"? Do they go into an infin=
ite loop? Do they *partially* create the zone, but stop? And what would p=
artial creation mean anyway -- an SOA RR with no NS RRs, or _vice_versa_?=
Your explanation of the problem was full of incomplete descriptions of s=
ymptoms, half-diagnoses and confusing and incorrect terminology. That's w=
hy I "invited" you to try clarifying it, not just for the benefit of bind=
-users, but for the benefit of anyone and anywhere else you are likely to=
ask your question. You're not likely to get a useful answer to your ques=
tion the way it is currently worded.

Um, yes, I am familiar with that RFC. What record type, in particular,=20
do you mean by "pointer"? There is only one Resource Record type that is =

referred to in RFC 1035 as a "pointer", and that is the PTR record type, =

which doesn't make any sense in the context of your problem, as=20
described. (For completeness, RFC 1035 also uses the term "pointer" in=20
two other contexts: 1) when discussing label compression, and 2) when=20
talking about the internals of the "catalog" structure that DNS=20
implementations were expected to use to hold DNS databases; but in=20
neither of those contexts is the word "pointer" used to refer to a=20
particular record type -- only PTR is referred to as a type of "pointer")=

Actually, I was trying to *save* you some time. Now that you know this is=
not a BIND problem, you can forthwith seek answers elsewhere, instead of=
becoming one of those morons who keeps sending the same "I didn't hear a=
nything last time, so I'll ask my question again" message to the list rep=
eatedly. Some folks just can't take a hint...
