Meet an ISC Staff Member – Razvan Becheriu!

We have done quite a few of these profiles now, but fortunately we have not yet run out of staff members! Let’s learn a little more about one of our senior software engineers, Razvan Becheriu.

Razvan Becheriu of ISC

Razvan has been with ISC for almost seven years, after previously working in the gaming, finance, and computer networking industries. He got his first computer at age 17 and first connected to the Internet when he was 18, but he’s come a long way from his start writing code on paper! One of his former jobs involved customizing Kea DHCP for a major client, which introduced Razvan to our software. He now designs and implements new features in Kea, plus debugs and fixes issues, writes documentation, and monitors test suites and performance results.

He says that the most interesting things about working at ISC are “coming up with novel ideas to fix difficult issues, but also doing routine work like investigating crashes and core dumps, multi-threading races and related issues, and resolving memory leaks caused by reference loops.” Since ISC projects are maintained for multiple systems, he appreciates the chance to work with both portable and platform-specific code.

Showing his typical sense of humor, Razvan says he wanted to work at ISC for the “fame and glory” of contributing to open source. “I learned that the DHCP server and client were developed by ISC and they run virtually everywhere, and I wanted to have my name in the AUTHORS file alongside all those professional people.”

Razvan loves working at ISC because “it offers me a lot of freedom. Working remotely has allowed me to work from a lot of different places, and now it lets me spend time with my kids every day.” He adds, “I get to do C++ programming, which I love. I like that the Kea project is still fairly new and uses new coding standards, design patterns, and architectural choices. Also, the team is very diverse, which I love because this allows us to see each task from different perspectives.”

Razvan’s passions include computers, computer games, science, and technology. He also enjoys traveling and getting to discover new places and people. He has visited Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Egypt, India, and many other countries around Europe; he loves the Greek islands and the Mediterranean Sea, and he likes lots of Asian cuisines. He says, “I think the best thing I bring to ISC is a different way of thinking. I am hard-working and relentless in discovering the cause of obscure issues.”

He was born and raised in Bucharest, but now lives in Brasov (Romania) with his wife and two children - and his beloved cat, Karmi. You’ll often find him talking to his twin brother about computer science or letting off steam by playing Hitman on his XBox.

Razvan has a degree as an automation and computer science engineer from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, but he says, “Unfortunately, that doesn’t help me understand all the different ways my toddlers can break things!”
