Subject=3A DNS troubleshooting and log rotation
Date=3A Thu=2C 17 Feb 2000 00=3A44=3A23 GMT
I've recently upgraded to bind 8=2E2=2E2p5 on our servers=2E One is SunOS
4 =5BSparc5=5D=2E=2E=2Esoon to be upgraded to Solaris=2C and the other is a=
Solaris
2=2E6 machine =5BUltra5=5D=2E Recently=2C even going back before the upgrad=
e=2C
we've been noticing occasional performance problems on our network=2E For
example=2C sometimes a user will request a web page and waits several
minutes without response=2E He can cancel the request and resubmit it and
immediately get the requested page=2E I'm starting to wonder if we're not
having some sort of DNS problem=2C for example=2C certain queries taking a
rather longer time than others depending on which name server was used=2E
How can I get information on name server performance=3F What's a good
package to look=3F
Also=2E=2E=2Ecan a running name server daemon be given some sort of signal =
to
get it to rotate its logs to log=2E0=2C log=2E1=2C etc=2E and open a new cu=
rrent
log=3F Do I need to stop and restart the daemon for that=3F
Thanks=21

You can set in the config file a size-limit for each logfile=2C and BIND
will automatically rotate it=2E You can also specify how many versions
it is to keep=2E
If you want to specifi a log-file rotation immediately =28eg
exactly at midnight etc=29=2C you can do this=3A
=09=23 mv log=2E3 log=2E4
=09=23 mv log=2E2 log=2E3
=09=23 mv log=2E1 log=2E2
=09=23 mv log=2E0 log=2E1
=09=23 mv log log=2E0
=09=23 ndc reload
As the logfile does not longer exist under the name=2C a reload will create=
a new logfile=2E
I did ask =28as part of our Bronze support contract=29 to provide a faciliy=
to
=2Aonly=2A closes=2Freopenes logfiles without the added overhead of a reloa=
d to =
facilitate this a bit better=2E Hopefully it will make it into BIND-9=2E
It gets more complicated if you GZIP =28or otherwise compress=29 the logfil=
es=2C
so they no longer conform to the naming scheme BIND expects=2E=2E=2E=2E
