A very minor side-effect (but one that I would like to understand the cause
of) is that when I try and resolve "mail.wilmot.me.uk" from my own network
(against a local caching-resolver (A Microsoft Win2003 server)) it is coming
bak with an error (when in fact I know that the record should exist)

Precisely ...

In this particular case, the "SOME" includes Microsoft "WIn2003, Win2003 R2,
Win 2008" (but Win2008 R2 seems to be operating correctly forsome reason)..
