on aix 5.2, error doing make with 9.5.0

I'm just using the commands straight out of the README - so I'm typing 
in ./configure and then ./make.  I don't even have GCC on this server. 
This is IBM's cc command that's being used.  What's strange is that I've 
installed the last 3 versions of bind on this machine with no problem at 
all.
