problems sending email to various domains

If you can't get the MX record, then there is definitely a problem on your end.
Start following the chain...can your server find SOA for the domain, can you
query other domains' MX records, are there any errors in your log file, is your
network connectivity working (telnet <IP> 53 *might* show you if there is a
network problem...it'll show you if tcp is open but not necessarily udp), etc.
