If you're using dynamic update, you MUST leave the zone files alone.
The name server will take care of managing them and any journal files.
If you interfere with these files, the name server will get annoyed
and Bad Things can happen to your dynamically updated zones.

In BIND, the zone file isn't the definitive source of zone data when
dynamic updates are involved. The updates are written to a journal
file: essentially a transaction log. It's the combination of what's in
these two files that define the zone. And that combination is managed
by the name server. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.
