My apologies.  Yes, the phrase is used because of German scientists
such as Einstein who needed to do "thought experiments" when their
theories outran the experimental capabilities of the day.  I suspect
that you are not the only one who had never run into this phrase,
correctly or with variations, so I am cc'ing back to the mailing list;
I trust you don't mind.
