/etc/resolv.conf specifies the default domain suffix to append, but that
should only be done if the normal lookup fails. Unless you're running a
system with a *very* old resolver library -- many early resolvers would try
appending the default domain *before* trying the name as given.
Current resolvers append the default domain first if the given name has not
dots, and try the name as given if it does.
