You have mail software that doesn't make MX queries? And you think your
DNS server is broken?

You have misunderstood the query type you're using. The "ANY" query is for
ANY record the cache has, not EVERY record that exists with a given
owner name (how could the cache know what record types exist at a given
point to query for them?)

You asked your cache for ANY RRs with an owner of hotmail.com. That's
what it returned to you. When you queried for the MX RRset it looked
that up and cached it. When you sent another ANY query, the cache knew
more than it did the first time and so could give you more information.
