Michael, that is not the case. The master is

     oxygen.aps.anl.gov

and the four slaves are

     dns1.anl.gov
     dns2.anl.gov
     ns2.es.net
     nsx.lbl.gov

None of the four slaves had a specific zone

     ser.aps.anl.gov

defined, but they all had the parent zone

     aps.anl.gov

defined. I defined the zone to dns1 and dns2, and the zone loaded
immediately. I have asked the hostmasters at the two offsite slaves
to define the zone to their named.conf files.

As for the master, I was told that there were no zone data changes;
the only change was the version of BIND. When dns1 and dns2 could not
resolve nodenames in the

     ser.aps.anl.gov

domain, the DNS server on oxygen.aps could resolve the names. This
seems to imply that oxygen had loaded the zone file without errors.
