Very Funny indeed,...

I'm running on the primary nameserver Solaris 8 with BIND 4.9.8 ( yes, it's
old, but it does the things we need, nothing more, nothing less. And yes,
we are looking at 9.1, but don't want to implement it yet nor version 8)
And compiled it with gcc 2.95.2.
Is that new enough for you ?

I never give up, bind 4 does what we need, don't want to upgrade to BIND9,
OS not upgradable for the moment. I love Solaris 8. Doen't want to use BSD.
It's only a secundairy nameserver, no legacy apps.

Actually,... that log idea gave me an angle to solving the problem.

udp checksum weren't enabled in the kernel:

See shres/sunos/ISSUES.

you can rebuild the kernel, but you can also enable it on the fly.

So, a note for the BIND community:

Problem solved ! named version 4.9.8 up and running on a Sparc platform
with SunOS 4.1.3_U1 compiled with gcc version 2.6.0 , no shared resolver
lib.
It needs the udp checksums enabled in the kernel !

IT works if you persist.

Regards.
