How to resolve a domain with no host name i.e. msnbc.com i nstead of www.msnbc.com

Assign the domain name the A record and make www.mydomain.com a CNAME.

I'm trying to get my domain to resolve to mydomain.com instead of
having to type www.mydomain.com.  I don't have a clue how to make this
work.

I'm running bind ver. 8.2.3 on Linux.
