Richard,

DNS has no ability detect and add hosts auto magically. It will only provide
name service based on what information you put into it. So the short answer
to your question is yes you have to enter each host you want to provide name
resolution for.

Perhaps you are thinking of DHCP, which issues IP addresses, and has the
capability through dynamic updates to send the host names and IP's to a DNS
server. The ISC distribution does this rather well, your mileage may vary
with other DHCP servers.

You may want to do some reading on both DNS and DHCP, and determine what you
need. The size of your network and frequency of adding or changing hosts
would help determine what services you need. If your network is small and
doesn't change often, it may be easier to just update DNS manually and not
implement DHCP at all. If it is large, and hosts are added or changed
frequently (or you just want a good learning experience), then DHCP with
dynamic updates to DNS is a good way to implement what you want.

Subject: does named automatically insert new machines that are on the

Hi there,

I have a redhat 6 box and was trying to get a dns to work, which i think i
have as pinging the server returns a reply, but if i try and ping the
workstation it does not return anything aprt from unkown host, so i had a
quick look in home.com.db file, and i notoced that there was a listing for
the server but not the workstation, so i added the workstation details like
the server and bingo i could ping the workstation, so does this mean i have
to enter the details for every computer on the network or is there a way for
dns to detect new pc and enter them into the database, which is what i
thought dns was about, stopping all that entering of ip's.

thanks in advance

Richard Wallis
