DNS is about using names rather than IP addresses. It does require somebody to tell the DNS server about this information. It is possible to setup DHCP to automatically update DNS with workstation entries when it hands out a lease, but otherwise you'll have to enter the information by hand for the domains you are taking care of. For other domains on the Internet, you can configure it to ask other DNS servers for the information.

The book "DNS and BIND" 4th edition would be helpful to you, or perhaps somebody else has some links to some sites with basic DNS information??

Subject: does named automatically insert new machines that are on the
ntework??

Hi there,

I have a redhat 6 box and was trying to get a dns to work, which i think i
have as pinging the server returns a reply, but if i try and ping the
workstation it does not return anything aprt from unkown host, so i had a
quick look in home.com.db file, and i notoced that there was a listing for
the server but not the workstation, so i added the workstation details like
the server and bingo i could ping the workstation, so does this mean i have
to enter the details for every computer on the network or is there a way for
dns to detect new pc and enter them into the database, which is what i
thought dns was about, stopping all that entering of ip's.

thanks in advance

Richard Wallis
