9.1.1 as root vs 8.2.3-REL as named

You can find information if the FAQ and the migration documents that are
part of the tar.gz package.

Do the following:

make clean
./configure --disable-threads [--prefix=/usr] <- if you don't want to
install in /usr/local
make
make test
make install

and start named (/etc/rc.d/init/named start)
