9.1.1 as root vs 8.2.3-REL as named

On my Linux (2.2.14-5.0), BIND version 9.1.1 won't run as an
unprivileged user:

  # named -u named
/usr/sbin/named: -u not supported on Linux kernels older than
  2.3.99-pre3 when using threads

My other option is 8.2.3-REL. In your opinion, which one is best from
a security point of view, 9.1.1 run as root, or 8.2.3-REL run as user
"named"?

Thank you for your help,
