On some Unix and Unix-like systems, this file or a similar one tells
what algorithm one should pursue in pursuit of hosts and other
information.  File, NIS, DNS.

The file can be named anything.  "Fred" would be somewhat meaningless,
though.  Personally, I find "root.hints" at least as descriptive as
"db.cache", if not more so.  ;-)
