Mail Transfer Agent.  Like 'sendmail' or 'postfix'.  Or others.

As opposed to MUA, Mail User Agent.  Like 'mail', 'Mail', 'mailx',
'elm', 'pine', 'mutt', 'emacs', Eudora, Netscape Messenger, and many
many others.
