"I have a Red Hat Linux 6.2 system with the default dns server,im
guessing BIND. i own a home network, and i want to get the other
computers online through this system. do i set the dns servers on the
other computers to the ip address of this system? how do i do this?"

There are some points to consider with this question:

        1. Either u are asking that u want to take those computers
online as in Share INTERNET with them and use the DNS server INORDER to
resolve domain name queries through ur REDHAT box

        2. Or secondly in contrary to point 1. you have ur internet
sharing enabled through IPCHAINS firewall in the linuxbox and using ur
LINUXBOX as a gateway.

So the solution to this is if u have not settled your home network
computers to use ur REDHAT's BOX as a DNS server then you better
configure them something like the following steps:

        1. Configure your homenetwork machine's to use ur RedHat BOX as
the default gateway.....as in am considering that you have only one
outgoing internet connection and thats on ur linux box AND configure the
TCP/IP setting on the home network computers to use ur LINUX box as the
default gateway + CONFIGURE your Home NETWORK machines to use your Linux
BOX as their DNS server aswell......

        2. And configure ur DNS server in the LINUX box as a forwarder
to the DNS server which ur XDSL/cable operator has provided you or else
do that manually... if u have not configured a DNS earlier u can get
loads of help @ www.linuxdoc.org and U can get some more help regarding
BIND @ www.isc.org .....

Hope this has solved ur problem....:-) If not then kindly please state
it more clearly

regards

Bilal
