How to use nslookup to check DNS server set-up?

Once you have your DNS server started and want to check it, what is the best
way? IE: you want to see it in the same way a query would be resolved if
that nameserver was registered with internic.

Is it best to move to another computer to run NSlookup so you are looking at
it from the outside?

When you us nslookup, do you use the IP address of the machine you're
looking for, or the nameserver name?
