upgrading w/o a compiler

Hello, I'm trying to upgrade from 8.1.2 to 8.2.2 on a machine w/no C 
compiler.  I have another machine with gcc installed, but i have limited 
experience installing software beyond typeing "make; make test; make 
install".  Will I need a compiler for an upgrade?  I assumed I would just 
type "make clean; make depend; make; make install" but I don't know at what 
stage I would need a C compiler or how I might be able to use the one on my 
other machine if it is needed.  Thanks,
