named dying

I have named running non-root on a linux machine and it runs great with
one exception. From time to time, without named shutting down, it simply
stops answering queries. nslookup won't even operate. It's a very simple
setup with the only option - at the moment - being

directory "/var/named";
pid-file "/var/named/named.pid";

I have chown'd the the directory and all it's contents to be owned by
named and have named running as named -u named -g named and the pid file
is also owned by named.named What are some possible reasons that named
would simply stop answering queries?
