Are you sure about this? It seems to me that Microsoft DNS always uses
zone files - they have always been there for me to edit directly (I seldom
use the GUI for zone updates). However, I believe the server can be
configured to "boot", i.e. read its configuration file, from a text file
instead from the registry.
