DNS running on a IP alias doesn't work!! Please help!

Did you try inverting the addresses on the server so that the real becomes the alias and the alias becomes the real? (just as a test to see whether it shows the same behaviour).
I recall a similar problem I had several years ago on AIX where it used the lowest Ip address in the DNS answers.
This was on AIX 4.2.1, though.
