named spawns

Ok I am new to this.... I am running FreeBSD 3.0. I have compiled and am 
running Bind 8.2 (no patches I know of).  When I reboot the system (or kill 
named) in messages everything appear good.  But, after running the system 
for a day or so in the messages log I get unable to bind to Ip address, and 
a new PID for named.  Then I do a ps aux and see multiple sessions of named 
running....anyone know what causes this?
