how to allow domain.com as well as www.domain.com ?

DOMAIN.COM is delegated from the COM domain.  That means that there must be
records of the form:

domain.com.  IN NS  <masterserver>
domain.com.  IN NS  <slaveserver>

Since this name has NS records, it can't also have a CNAME record.
