What are named "RRs"?

I regularly get messages like this in the system log of my Linux box:

        named[419]: Cleaned cache of 70 RRs 

What is happening to produce this message?  I can't find any references 
to "RR" in the (v8.1.2) named man pages.

Any pointers?  Thank you.
