I think you're missing the point. Resources don't care how intelligent a
task is, a mail server still needs to be maintained, and that costs money.
And you are wrong, maintaining a mail server _is_ more difficult today
than it was 25 years ago, because the internet is a lot more hostile now
than it was then.
