Doesn't have to be an even number. You can do A&B, B&C, C&A for 3; or A&B ... D&E, E&A for 5; and so on.

You can log to syslog - just make sure it's async logging and then syslog won't fight for disk performance. Just add "-" in front of file specs, eg change /var/log/messages to -/var/log/messages. If the syslog is on different spindle(s) to the leases file then there'll be no conflict.

Mind you, with a larger installation with multiple servers you may well want to collect syslogs centrally for other reasons.
