But Ron asked about the CLIENT

I think the answer is that the client is so tightly integrated into 
the system that it's probably 'difficult' to pull it out and change 
it. It may well be possible, I don't know, but since there is a 
system supplied client then there's not too much incentive for people 
to put the work in - unlike Linux etc.
