I did search the archives for a while, but did not find a  
satisfactory sollution. Sorry for being impatient!

I will take 3.1 for a spin, and will probably deploy it.

If it works as I expect the upside is too high to be without, and if  
we can aid in squashing a bug or two in the process everyone wins! :-)
