| nsupdate looks at your resolv.conf. Maybe it's not pointing at your local
| server, and if you've set up a test environment with a zone not publicly
| delegated, it can not find it.

Thank you. That was the problem. I could do lookups with `host` or
`nslookup`. Once I put "nameserver 135.109.16.61" in /etc/resolv.conf
things are working.
As a side note I found that I needed a USER key and had to check perms
on the records directory.
