A (sub)domain can also be larger than a zone. Consider the following  
zones:

example.com.
lab.example.com.
dev.lab.example.com.

The "lab" domain contains the "dev" subzone as well as its own zone,  
yet is also a subdomain (and a subzone) of example.com.
