This version number is not very informative outside the Debian world.
Please show the initial log message when you invoke named with -g,
which will show the "standard" version number of BIND:

% named -g
18-Nov-2008 14:07:51.316 starting BIND 9.4.2-P2 -g
18-Nov-2008 14:07:51.342 loading configuration from '/private/etc/named.conf'
18-Nov-2008 14:07:51.360 /private/etc/named.conf:4: open: /etc/rndc.key: file not found
18-Nov-2008 14:07:51.361 loading configuration: file not found
18-Nov-2008 14:07:51.361 exiting (due to fatal error)

Also, please show the number of sockets named opens when it warns
about 'too many open file descriptors'.
