As another poster pointed out, there are no slaves, they're all 
effectively masters that calculate the answes on the fly.  But what do 
short TTLs have to do with slaves, anyway?  TTL is used by caching 
servers, not slaves.

Yes, that's a generic sig I use for all tech groups, and there's no way 
of making it change when it passes through the news-to-mail gateway.  I 
have a mail filter that automatically deletes anything that has the 
mailing list name in the header, so only people replying through the 
newsgroup need to concern themselves.
