nsupdate cannot update, only add or delete

Am I correct in my reading of the man page that the only way to modify
the RDATA of
a record is to delete the old one and then add the new one?
[technically i guess i could add the new one first and then delete the
old one]
 
But for instance if I have a record
 
a.test.net. 500 IN 1.2.3.4
and I want to change it to 
a.test.net. 500 IN 4.3.2.1
 
I have to do a delete and an add.
Is that correct?
