Any Way To Make Root A Record Point to CNAME?

Normally if you want company.com and www.company.com to point to the same
web site, you would have A records that might look like this in the zone
file:

    @ A 199.99.99.99
    www A 199.99.99.99

Unfortunately our web site is done through a Yahoo CNAME, so our www record
is:

    www CNAME company.site.yahoo.net.

If I try to set the root to the same I get major failures during zone
transfers. The failed line is:

    @ CNAME company.site.yahoo.net.

I assume I have a syntax error here. Is there any way to get the root
domain to use a CNAME instead of an A record?
