I doubt you will have a general success here. DNS (and domain names in
general assumes ONE namespace), mixing
hostfiles and dns is also a big unknown territory.

What you could do however is to host your applications
within vmware hosts, in each host you can mix and match
whatever name-resolution stuff you care to to, and none of
your setups will affect the other ones.
