GENERATE and memory consumption

Hello,

a few of our binds running on somewhat elderly hardware
started swapping recently. The culprit are our pool zones
(forward es well as reverse), whose entries number in
the high 6 figures, low 7 figures range and keep
growing over time.

Right now those zones are auto-generated by our
provisioning software.

One of the things I looked into because of this
problem is the $GENERATE directive.
I have not found any conclusive information on its
direct memory inpact; from what I've read I infer there
is none - it just creates those entries when the zone
file is read.

Is my assumption correct ?

Is anybody aware of other approaches to this problem - or
is buying memory and upgrading to a 64bit OS just cheaper ?
