nsupdates failing from remote machine -- 9.2.5

I have a wierd problem with updates failing if I attempt to make an
"update add" remotely. The problem only happens if the exact name I am
adding does not already exist as an A record
My zone has a wildcard which points to a CNAME. If I create an explicit
record that points to a CNAME for the name I am trying to add, it also
fails.
It only works if the record already exists as an A record, or if I am
running the update from the local machine.
Both the local and remote machines are running ISC BIND 9.2.5 on Gentoo
Linux. The setup was working before a recent update to 9.2.5 (from 9.2.2)
The error message I get is:
tsig.c:293: REQUIRE(targetp != ((void *)0) && *targetp == ((void *)0))
failed.
Aborted
For privacy reasons, I need to change the IP addresses and domain names in
the example below.
I also see problems just checking a rrset:
