problem with resolving SOME EXTERNAL domains

Your subject says you have problems with "SOME EXTERNAL domains". You
showed us a dig +trace with only one domain, one which fails. I infer
from your subject that some domains do work. Show that so we can see
the difference.

No opinion, it is perfectly normal. Test the root name servers with
dig, *not* with ping (in a world of firewalls, ping means now
nothing.)
