searching dns entries (locally) - any thoughts?

Well that used to be the case. It might still be. [I don't know or
care.] However each TLD will have its own policy and rules about
access to its zone files. So you'd need to ask each of them. And as I
said before you'll need to be prepared to answer lots of questions
about why you want the data and what you'll do with it. Legal
agreements may have to be signed too.
