unknown host on server

Hi all,

i have set up a bind server for my intranet. From my clients the dns works fine. But by trying a ping ot telnet command on the server himself  i get the error message 
"Unknown host". Paradoxically the dig and host commands are working on the server.

Has anyone an idea why the dig command works fine on the server and the ping or telnet commands malfunctions?

I am using bind 9.2.3 and SUSE Linux 9.1
