Hrm, not sure how this would have any affect on these services.  As
long as a name resolves courier and apache shouldn't care (they
actually shouldn't care otherwise either).

Learning is great - I love learning :) but I guess I'm not sure what
you are trying to accomplish here.  Seems like you want to break up
your subdomains into their own zone records - do you really have a
need to do this other than for sake of learning? (<-good enough
reason I suppose) I run DNS for several medium sized companies and
there are many, many features in BIND I have no absolutely no use
for, and thus don't use, and my stuff runs properly and secure - at
least so far :)  

If you really do have a need for this, perhaps someone else on the
list can shed some light on accomplishing this task because I'm not
sure I'd be of much help beyond this point.
