forwarding a subdomain

 The DNS would expect the same.  However, the fact that a delegation
exists doesn't make the delegated to server authoritative.  A
nameserver is authoritative only if it has data for the zone itself. 
In your situation, the nameserver is not authoritative because it has
to forward the query to another sever.
