I flew off the handle a bit quick there, sorry.  In most cases (at
least FreeBSD) you install the bind port, change resolv.conf to
localhost, start named and you have a caching nameserver.  It seemed
that the only part he was missing was what to put in resolv.conf.

My answer was more in the "get it running and then figure out the details" camp.
