Hi all,
I am trying to follow up on an old thread.

My OS is RH 6.x, I have installed bind 9.2.4x
and have put links to some of the files and it seems to work well.

Can I delete the balance files in /usr/sbin
" named-xfer ndc irpd named-bootconf dnskeygen "
I have not made any links to them.

[root at dhamma /root]# ls -tral /usr/sbin

and in /usr/bin "addr mkservdb"
They also have no links to them.

The balance which are renamed old files
"nslookup.8.3.3 dig.8.3.3 dnsquery host.8.3.3 nsupdate.8.3.3"
can ofcause go.

I found this on in the Archives, and I find Peter Håkanson's reply
below very nice, but I have a problem with what to do with the balance
files which has no similar names in Ver 9.2.

You have two options :
1/ overwrite the ones you have ( installed by redhat)

2/ place them somewhere else ( usr/local/[sbin|bin]
Both ways has advantages and disadvantages.

(1) , which i usually prefer, has the advantage that all startupscrips
will continue to work, disadvantage that any upograde might
overwrite the binaries. Keeping the compile-directory and
install script will be handy in that case.

(2) has the advantage that the old binaries is untouched, but
you have to edit startup scripts. Also in this case an upgrade
might screw your setup by overwriting your startup scripts.

Between a rock and a hard place you have to choose one.

Thank you for any help
