It may not be that hard actually.  If your clients use DHCP and they are 
a mix of Win2K and WinXP, you can set up search suffixes (synonymous to 
the search parameter in /etc/resolv.conf) for your domains.  Win2K and 
WinXP machines will default to using DNS before they try WINS.
