Host or Dig - Which command to use?

If the choice were limited to just the two, I'd choose "dig", not 
least because systems are often supplied with an entirely separate 
command named "host" with different syntax and semantics.

It's a very flawed tool.  Don't use it.  This advice has (with the
exception of one lone voice in the Microsoft DNS server newsgroup) 
been unanimously given by _all_ of the well-known names in the various
public discussion fora for DNS softwares, for over three years now.  
Pay attention to it, therefore.
